12 Quotes By Dr Samuel Hahnemann – Father of Homoeopathy

  1. Dare To be Wise

The quote “Dare to be wise” is commonly attributed to the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates.

This quote suggests that we must have the courage to ask questions, challenge what we think we know, and explore new ideas.

This is one of the useful life lessons to be conscientious in life.

Let’s dare to be wise.

  1. “If anything annoys you, give no heed to it; if anything is too much for you, have nothing to do with it; if anything seeks to drive you, go slowly and laugh at the fools who wish to make you unhappy. What you can do comfortably, do; what you cannot do, don’t bother yourself about.”

This quote is mentioned in the letter written by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann to one of his patients. Dr. Hahanemann has explained the importance of self-care.

  1.  “I was less solicitous about reading than about digesting what was read and was careful to read little but to read correctly and to classify it in my mind before reading further’’

There is so much to learn from this statement. Nowadays, we consume a vast amount of information online or through reading. However, we must focus on quality rather than quantity.

We must consume information correctly and wisely.

We must classify that information in our minds to use it wisely.

In this era of social media, we must be careful about consuming and sharing information.

Dr Samuel Hahnemann, the Father of Homeopathy, used to follow some rules for reading. He always made sure to read things carefully and understand them before moving on to more reading. He also mentions the importance of organising the information in his mind before continuing with more reading.

  1. “So I read by myself unweariedly, of course, but always only of the best that was procurable and only so much as I could digest”
  1. ‘‘Never to accept anything in science until it has been proven to be true by investigation’’

Through this beautiful quote by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, we can understand that we should not accept something as a fact just because someone says it is.

We should never believe something in science until it has been proven to be true through careful investigation.

This is applicable in our daily lives.

Do not believe anything blindly unless you go into the depths of the information.

  1. “Never take anything for granted nor receive anything in any science as a truth, until you have investigated it for yourself.”
  1. “ I have not lived in vain”

It takes so much courage and self-awareness to say this. Through this statement, Dr Samuel Hahnemann reflects his belief in the importance of his work and contributions to medicine. Hahnemann wanted to convey that his life had not been wasted; rather, he felt fulfilled because he had made significant contributions to the field of medicine.

We must live our lives with this approach, and we must be grateful for our choices in our lives.

  1. Man ( The delicate human machine ) is not constituted for overwork; he can not overwork his power or faculties with impunity. If he does so from ambition, love of gain, or other praiseworthy motive, he sets himself in opposition to the order of nature, and his body suffers injury or destruction.

Through this quote by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, we can understand that our body is like a delicate machine. Just like a machine, it can do amazing things, but it also has limits. If you push it too hard, it can break down.

When people work excessively in pursuit of success or wealth, it can harm them.

So, even though it’s good to have goals and work hard, it’s equally important to take care of yourself. If you push yourself too far, you could end up causing harm to your body and mind. We must find a balance between our work and life.

10. There is good even in hurtful things.

This statement is like an enlightenment, which helps us to believe that adversity can be turned into an opportunity. This quote by the father of homoeopathy offers a unique perspective on our life problems, encouraging us to appreciate the positive changes it has brought about.

To explain it, Dr Hahnemann has given many examples, one of which is that he who has made a narrow escape from drowning learns to swim, and by this accomplishment is enabled to save the lives of others.

By simply understanding the beauty of this statement, we can take a look into our lives and see that we have come a long way, and there is always something in the hurtful thing that helps us to grow personally.

11. In order to win the race, quickness is not all that is required.

In this quote, Dr Hahnemann wants us to understand that

To succeed in a competition, it’s not just about being fast. It is important to stay calm and cool. Sometimes, being too eager or excited can lead to mistakes or stress. Hence, by applying this quote in our lives, we can make better decisions and perform our best without getting too worked up.

12. It is not only the greater bodily exertion that injures you, it is even more the attendant strain on the mind, and the overwrought mind in its turn affects the body injuriously.

This quote is written by Hahnemann while writing a letter to one of the patients.

Dr Samuel Hahnemann, the Father of homoeopathy, explains that mental exertion is in fact more harmful than physical exertion. Hence, while being busy with our work, we must be careful about our actions. One must not give up on taking rest whenever required.

Note:

These quotes are written by Dr Samuel Hahnemann, collected from his book Life and Letters of Dr Samuel Hahnemann – Thomas Lindsley Bradford. Compiled by me, Dr Ravina Kadam-Palande, BHMS, to serve as a valuable gift for many homoeopaths and readers.
